Jewish Language Research Website

Samples

This section of the website presents samples of written and recorded language from several Jewish languages. In the text samples section we present scans of translations of Hebrew liturgical texts (Genesis and parts of the Passover Haggadah) into Jewish languages spanning four continents and almost a millenium. In the sound samples section we present links to other websites that have sound recordings from several Jewish languages. In addition, we provide an opportunity for the reader to delve into comparative Jewish linguistic studies by presenting examples of אחד מי יודע ('Who Knows One') in several Jewish languages and by demonstrating how some Jewish communities have used calque (word-for-word) translations of Biblical texts.
